New College Policy

Many students have asked us about using New College's library computers. We contacted a librarian, and this is the library's response:

"Each school sets their own policy for library and computer usage. Typically priority goes to students paying for and attending that institution. The Jane Bancroft Cook Library went to a log on system for computers this past fall. With the log on we are ensuring that we have computer resources for the students at New College of Florida and the University of South Florida Sarasota-Manatee.

That being said, we realize that other people have needs for computers. We have set up three public computers. These are available on a 1st come 1st serve basis and do not require a log on. Although the public computers have a 1 hr. limit if no one is waiting the person using the computer can feel free to continue using it once it restarts.

All of our databases are available on these public computers as is the Office suite of software. All computers, including the public computers, have the ability to send jobs to the printers."

Book Suggestion: How to Make Love Like a Porn Star: A Cautionary Tale

While this title appears provocative, the content does seem to support the social science deviance assignment. Your suggestion will be forwarded to Collection Development.

Comment: “What if the Library could keep the DVD’s behind the counter and when a student wants to borrow it they could be retrieved. It would add greater security to the Library.”

Thank you for your concern, however one of the benefits of having the DVDs available for students, is so that they may browse freely, without the staff becoming an additional barrier.

The incident of DVD theft has actually been quite low since the Student Choice DVDs have been available; they are after all, free to checkout for a week.
