Request:
“Please Consider this,… Rosetta Stone for multiple, different languages, preferably Japanese,… I know that it is excruciatingly expensive, but, I believe that over time it will be very beneficial. I used to have it at my old school and we loved it! So here is my suggestion.

Thank you for your suggestion.

We actually have been considering this; there is a great deal of discussion between different libraries. There is a concern with copyright. If we purchased this software, it might only be able to be used on campus in the Library, one user at a time. We appreciate your input in the discussion.

Comment:
“Night shift does the best job (ever) in the Library! Kirsty, Henry and Stephanie,…Always smile and help the students feel welcomed!”

Book Request:
Reserve Textbooks
• Fundamentals of Litigation for Paralegals (PLA 2203)
• PLA 1610
• PLA 2600
To whom it may concern: These Books were available in the school Library. I am a financially limited student and can’t afford to buy books unless at a hefty discount so it is invaluable that this resources available. My only complaint is that the book for CGS 1000 wasn’t available in the Library or ARC Building. It is a very expensive book (in my opinion overpriced) for a basic class required for my degree and I hope it’s made available for students to come. I cannot underscore enough the need that exists for students like myself that each department supply the student body. This resource by contributing at least one copy of each textbook to the student Library!”

Thank you for your comment. We will continue to work with all departments to obtain textbook copies.

Comment: “ You should have a library card for users who don’t have a student ID to print. We can pay for the prints!”

Comment:

1) Upon entrance to the Library, the rug where the previous metal detectors are, gets in my way.-Suggest moving the rug back before the metal,…

2) The metal detectors seem a bit off-centered an narrow (to the far end from entrance).-Suggest Adjust the length of spacing of the gates to allow room for easier passage.

3) The yellow cords & cables on the ground next to the metal detectors look sloppy and may pose a threat to safety or health.-Suggest Nail it to rug stretched out or top it along walls/borders stretched out. Slack should also be coiled & banded.

1) College Facilities is in the process of assessing tripping hazards with the new security system. Adjustments will be made.

2) The new security system was placed in its current location based upon installation specifics and has been bolted to the floor. We are unable to widen or center it. It is ADA compliant and wide enough for wheelchair access.

New College Policy

Many students have asked us about using New College's library computers. We contacted a librarian, and this is the library's response:

"Each school sets their own policy for library and computer usage. Typically priority goes to students paying for and attending that institution. The Jane Bancroft Cook Library went to a log on system for computers this past fall. With the log on we are ensuring that we have computer resources for the students at New College of Florida and the University of South Florida Sarasota-Manatee.

That being said, we realize that other people have needs for computers. We have set up three public computers. These are available on a 1st come 1st serve basis and do not require a log on. Although the public computers have a 1 hr. limit if no one is waiting the person using the computer can feel free to continue using it once it restarts.

All of our databases are available on these public computers as is the Office suite of software. All computers, including the public computers, have the ability to send jobs to the printers."

Suggestions from 2/26-3/04/2010

Book Suggestion: How to Make Love Like a Porn Star: A Cautionary Tale

While this title appears provocative, the content does seem to support the social science deviance assignment. Your suggestion will be forwarded to Collection Development.

DVD Suggestion: Armageddon

This title has been suggested before. If funds are available, this title will be added to the list for purchase. Suggestion forwarded to Collection Development.

Comment: “What if the Library could keep the DVD’s behind the counter and when a student wants to borrow it they could be retrieved. It would add greater security to the Library.”

Thank you for your concern, however one of the benefits of having the DVDs available for students, is so that they may browse freely, without the staff becoming an additional barrier.

The incident of DVD theft has actually been quite low since the Student Choice DVDs have been available; they are after all, free to checkout for a week.

Please provide fragrance free hand sanitizer or wipes for keyboards & mouse.

We will inquire to see if fragrance free hand sanitizer and wipes are available.
Currently, hand sanitizer should be available throughout the Library. Please inquire if any bottles are empty.
Wipes for cleaning are available upon request.

I don’t think it’s fair to force students to maintain a minimum balance on their cards. - thanks

The escrow for the new print system has been set to .50 cents.
We will forward your comment to the appropriate college office to see if the escrow can be reduced & report back.

Suggestions from 1/29-2/4/2010

Book Suggestion: Please order the book Lovely Bones. I have seen the movie and would like to read the book.

The book has already been ordered and will be available soon. There is an eAudio copy that you can download and listen to. Check our Book Catalog or ask on of our Librarians for details.

For the Print Card. We shouldn’t have to have a minimum balance to print. Also, I think it would be more efficient if the machine was able to accept coins.

The escrow for the new print system has been set to .50 cents.

We will forward your comment to the appropriate college office to see if the escrow can be reduced and to find out if a coin box is an option in the future.

Please make the Library available on the weekends. This is a 4 year school with no access to research materials. Students with jobs and heavy course loads need to have access to the Library on the weekends.

We will pass along your request to Administration.

Do not forget that many of our resources are available 24/7 via the Virtual Library, http://www.scf.edu/Library

Ask-A-Librarian also has weekend hours and while the Librarians you can chat with may not always be SCF Librarians, they are Academic Librarians from other institutions and they are very willing to help.

http://askalibrarian.org/scfms

Extended Weekend Hours!!! USF has weekend hours. So many of us don’t have computers and can’t afford them (which is partially why we go to MCC…) The Library is the HEART of any academic institution! All the more reason to have weekend hours!! PLEASE!

This is a great library, give the students access to it on the weekends!

-Love, Name

We will pass along your request to Administration.

Thank you for being a Library user and supporter. We love helping you.

“Two very intelligent, artistic films”

Thank you for this suggestion. Forwarded to Collection Development.

Since you are closed on weekends, can you arrange for SCF students to have log on access at New College Library (with their own laptops).

Thank you for bringing this up.

Although we do have a reciprocal book borrowing agreement with the USF/New College Library, access to their virtual library or their wireless is not part of the agreement.

We will endeavor to come up with a solution.
